エステルハージィ博士について
では、さっそく外国を舞台にした、過激で、物議をかもし、低俗で、アヴァンギャルドな時代物にとりかかろう。たとえ餓死する羽目になろうとも。
デイヴィッドスン「ナイルの水源」（浅倉久志訳）
アヴラム・デイヴィッドスンが1970年代半ばからおよそ10年間にわたって書きつづけた〈エステルハージィ博士〉連作は、彼の代表作のひとつである。
時は20世紀初頭、バルカン半島中央部に位置する架空の小国スキタイ＝パンノニア＝トランスバルカニア三位一体王国を舞台に、希代の大博士エンゲルベルト・エステルハージィがさまざまな事件を解決していく。その内容は、怪奇趣味濃厚な探偵小説（というより、ほとんど捕物帖）、あるいはエキゾティックかつ博覧強記な幻想小説というべきもので、デイヴィッドスン以外には書き得ない唯一無比の作品群である。実際、1975年にまとめられたThe Enquiries of Doctor Eszterhazyは、1976年度国際幻想文学大賞を受賞しているほどだ。
80年代に入って、デイヴィッドスンはエステルハージィ博士の若き日を描きはじめた。これら新作短編を加えて、1990年には決定版ともいえるThe Adventures of Doctor Estzerhazyが出版された。
